Eyal Yanilov Seminar Review: May 23rd PDF E-mail
all_of_us_with_eyal.jpgFour men are in a cab and three of them are holding guns. The gunmen have intentions of robbing the cabbie, killing him and making off with the car. The cab driver ties to seize an opportunity and makes a quick move for the gun the closest car jacker is holding. The gun goes off shooting one of the perpetrators in the back seat then the robber simply pulls his gun away from the cab driver and shoots him twice killing him. Eyal Yanilov, the top Krav Maga Instructor in the world and the head of the International Krav Maga Federation, explains the reason the cabbie was killed is that unfortunately he didn’t fully understand the problem he faced.

These were some of the fundamentals of what Eyal was teaching at a recent seminar he conducted at the Colorado Fight Factory. At its lowest level the two most basic issues in self defense are having an understanding of the problem you face and then having a solution for your problem. You cannot defend against something you don’t understand and with gunplay being involved it ultimately and unfortunately cost the cabbie his life. The cabbie didn’t understand that if you don’t have control of the elbow or complete control of the weapon then you really don’t have control of anything. The arm can then be pulled back allowing the gunman to fire rounds into his intended target which given any basic car jacking scenario could just as easily be you. These are the types of issues the IKMF hear about and develop defenses for everyday. The Wingate Institute in Israel is where Eyal and his top instructors analyze threats and find solutions. It was easy to recognize the vast knowledge and years of experience he has right from the beginning but to understand how much respect the man deserves you also need to understand what he has done and where he comes from.

Imi Lichtenfeld is credited as being the “Grand Master” of Krav Maga.  When Nazi fascism threaten his Jewish community of Bratislava, Imi and some of his friends decided to take it to the streets and fight instead of just turning the other cheek.  The very roots of Krav Maga were developed there in the tough streets scarred with racism and violence.  Eventually Imi had to flee Nazi occupation and move to Palestine.  Once there he taught combat techniques to the Jewish the underground groups Haganah and Palmach.  Soon to follow the state of Israel was established (in 1948) and with it came the Israeli Defense Forces where Imi’s true calling was found.  Imi became the Chief Instructor for Physical Fitness and Krav Maga (Contact Combat) were he refined his craft over a period of 20 years.  Imi later modified Krav Maga for civilian use and created the “Israeli Krav-Maga Federation” in 1978. Eyal Yanilov began training in Krav Maga in the early 1980s and became Imi’s top student and instructor.  He earned only one of two “Founders Diplomas for Excellence” ever given by Imi and for over 25 years he has developed and refined techniques for ever changing threats.

INTRODUCTORY CLASS
This is an introduction for prospective students who think they might be interested in Krav Maga training.  Sometimes trying new things can be intimidating and the purpose of this class is to help make students feel more comfortable and understand what Krav Maga training is all about. We will start with some of the background of Krav Maga and then we will cover stance and movement, basic combatives, combative defenses and self-defense.  By the end of this class students will be able to jump right into a normal class and know what to expect.

KRAV MAGA CLASS
These classes will be divided by beginner, intermediate and advanced.  The beginner class will cover level 1 material, while intermediate will cover level 2.  The advanced class is for level 3 students on up.

KM Level 1 - In level one, students are introduced to a couple critical concepts for surviving physical assaults: instinctive responses to common threats, and simple, aggressive counter-attacks. Students will develop highly useful and easy to remember skills in a very short period of time. Defenses against being choked, moving while on the ground, using knees, elbows, and palm strikes are some of the techniques covered.

KM Level 2 - A wider variety of combatives are taught as well as a increase in the number of self defense scenarios. Fighting from the ground, getting caught in headlocks, defending against kicks, bear hugs, being pushed against walls are some of the new scenarios taught in level 2. The intensity and variety of the workouts also increases.

KM Level 3 - Even more combatives and scenarios such as being choked or head locked on the ground are taught in Level 3. Students are expected to put their Krav Maga techniques to use in more practical contexts, such as dealing with a greater number of surprise attacks, and sparring with other students. There is an emphasis on using the skills learned in previous levels as building blocks to increase the ability to respond effectively in a wide variety of possible situations.

KM Level 4 - Curriculum includes advanced punch and kick combinations and there defenses. Gun, Knife and Stick weapon defenses are learned including advanced ground fighting. Sparring is included on a more regular basis.

KM Level 5 - Greater stress and tension is added to all advanced material, including multiple attackers who are either armed or unarmed. Sparring sessions may include multiple attackers as well.

Krav Maga FIGHT**

Introduction to Fight - The focus of the Intro Fight Class is to introduce beginners to the basic concepts of standup fighting. Takedowns and ground fighting are covered in the next level of fight class.  This class is designed for students who have never fought and never faced an opponent intent on hitting them.

Fight 1 - This curriculum is designed for students who have taken Intro Fight or who come with previous basic fight experience.  The areas of focus are additional stand-up techniques, working in the clinch, basic takedowns and ground.  Basic groundwork is covered, but most submissions and tactics are saved for later fight training.

Freestyle Fight - This class is for students who have completed the Fight 1 Class.  The areas of focus are further stand up techniques including clinch work, additional takedown and ground work.  Also included at this level are techniques for multiple attackers.

** This class is not for students who are interested in MMA fighting.  The techniques taught in these classes are for students to better their Krav Maga/Street Fighting skills. This class meets once a week and is curriculum oriented where we will build on your skills from the previous week.  MMA fighters spend hours on the mat preparing for fights.
